I didn't know an ISP could do so much for you !

Formerly hosted by dans-home for free, I signed up at aoindustries, and the service has got even better. Great server performances, great services (emails are answered in less than 10 minutes during work-hours), the people behind aoindustries are just great. Besides great overall performances and a very decent price, what I like is the service and attention you get. Once I was informed by the tech people that I had alot (over thirty) sleeping mySQL connections, and they suggested that I should check my code for bugs. They also suggested that I use a ConnectionPool (thanks Jason for that one). Did anyone ever hear of an ISP that finds your bugs and suggests work-arounds ? You just have to love the phpMyAdmin module, the analysed log reports, the two mySQL users (one with full access, one with just select, insert and update privileges), the detailed invoice emailed to you every month, ssh, and so much more. Everything you could ever want is there and more. All starting for 30 dollars. And you even get one month free for each referral. One bad thing about aoindustries ? Too many features, not enough time (lives ?).

Huh?!

Lets be blunt. The service that this ISP provides absolutely sucks. They only respond to emails if you tell them you are interested in signing up. Once you are signed up, you never hear anything. I'm not kidding. I can't begin to enumerate the number of times I've mailed them in the past month about setting up POP3 accounts. The JSP is also really slow. HTML is fast (of course), but JSPs can take a minute under certain conditions (even when recompiles aren't needed!).

Server Problems and Terrible Support!!!

Everything with AO Industries started great, but for the last several months, the Java VMs have had a tendency to generate Internal Error message for no apparent reason and making my site unavailable for hours at a time. The customer control panels available on their web page don't seem to work at all, and today the server is out of space making it impossible for me to make any updates to my site. I have tried over and over to contact customer support, and they never respond. I am today shopping for a new hosting service and will not remain here a day longer than I have to.

Highly recommend for features and cost but reliability and support could be better

If you are looking for Apache Open Source heaven here it is. However, if you must have 99.9% uptime or extremely responsive support you will probably be disappointed. The online support in the form of FAQ's, file system information and several handy utilities is very good. Tomcat is set up in such a way that you can easily restart the JVM as needed and all the Apache Open Source projects are here. AOIndustries has done a very good job of setting up the environment for Web development. On the down side support can be inconsistent and at times seemingly non-existent. If you really need the support and happen to hit one of the poor response times it can be frustrating. If downtime costs you money it probably isn't worth the low price to host here. Sometimes things are tended to but you might not find out until you check the client area and find they have automated what you have requested. A follow up email would be nice but does not always happen. All things considered, including the $30 a month cost, this is a good value. If the support and reliability aren't up to the standards your Web site requires you should be looking at other and probably more expensive alternatives.

Update on previous post

I have been having problems for over a month and I have NEVER received a response from technical support (even though they say unlimited support). The log files that are supposed to be processed automatically quit being processed on 2/26/01. I was ignored for more than a month trying to get an answer as to why they quit running. Today (04/02/01) I finally fixed it myself - but THIS WAS AN ERROR CAUSED BY THEIR DEFAULT CONFIGURATION FILES! I fixed theconfig files to quit looking for no-existant logs and it now works. So, if you have the time and knowledge to do EVERYTHING yourself, this might be a good deal for you. If you want to create a very simple site and don't care about all the features being provided, you might like these guys. However, if you want to create a professional looking site, you better have some experience with UNIX/LINIX administration 'cause if something goes wrong, they will NEVER respond to you. My site is still hosted by them because I haven't had the time to move it yet. It is just a matter of time...

Don't even bother

To be fair, the people at AO Industries are very nice and helpful. The problem is that you can't always get in touch with them. I had my sites go down for almost 3 days and I couldn't get an email or anyone on the phone. Not good.

Typical salesman approach - i.e. fast pre-sales response. However, some of the features I received e.g. phpmyadmin weren't configured correctly so were useless. Site went down (in one case for about 3 days). Email response was existent - although I don't call a 3/4 day response time very professional. True, they do have excellent features. It's a pity many of them do not work and there was almost non-existent technical support - otherwise it could be a very good site to stick with. I stayed for less than a month.

J2EE support

AO Industries now offers J2EE support on JBoss 2.2.2 an EJB 1.1 CTM. This functionality is now available as standard on the Level 2 and Level 3 shared server accounts at no extra cost. They offer JBoss 2.2.2 intergrated with Tomcat 3.2.2 to provide the full J2EE stack. In my view this functionality along with the other features offered completes the entire suite of Java programming on the web along with XML. Another exciting thing to note, all the software the ISP provides is open source (with the entire apache.org software) therefore you are assured the ISP will always update features as and when they are available keeping you at the cutting edge of technology. Finally, the exciting thing is, apache.org software as proved to be just as good if not better as commercial software along with JBoss (possibly a BEA killer) for just $50 a month I think it's a steal. Allan.

Don't expect support

If you're an expert with linux, apache, etc. and can do everything without support, then you may want to give this company a try. However, I signed up in April and getting support has been like pulling teeth. Email to the listed support address goes ignored for weeks. They added an online support ticket system, but I've had a ticket out there for at least a week marked URGENT, and it's gotten no response. I can't find a way to add mailboxes that are actually usable, since there is no way to set the passwords. You can add shell accounts that have mailboxes, but you can only have a few of those.

My sales enquiries go unanswered after days, what hope is there!

I've spent some time and numerous emails trying to just get some details of their services. To date I haven't received a single response from them. Needless to say I'm not joining a company where sales enquiries dont get answered. How long is it going to take for support queries to get answered?

Cancelled service, but can't get them to stop charging my credit card

When I first signed up they took weeks to set up my account. I should have known better. For awhile my site worked fine, but then the server started going down. I took out service tickets to map an additional domain name and they ignored the requests. Impossible to contact, no service at all. Finally I TRIED to cancel service. They cannot be contacted by phone, so I emailed them, told them to cancel in a service ticket, and left a detailed phone message. I also deleted all my files and moved to another ISP. The next month they charged me again! I called and got Dan, who apologised, said he would remove my card number, and give me a refund check. The check never came, and in Feb I was charged yet again! Legal action is now pending. Do you need more info to stay away?

AO Industries rocks

AOI is good where many ISPs fail: hearing tech feedback. While their spam filtering is still allowing more than what it could IMO, their hosting has some very good points and allows user self-service. For example, in their new setup they support multiple versions of PHP, including the latest. This is very interesting. Allowing users to choose different versions will certainly reduce the pain associated with upgrading to a new version, since users can go back if needed and do so without a support call.

I have been with AO Industries for over two years. I haven't had personal service like this since the 1960's. All email inquiries/support issues have been handled within 24 hours. Truely a developer's web host with all packages promptly keep up-to-date. It doesn't get much better than this.

I've been here since the beginning and the range of features, extent of customisability are simply brilliant (and they get better all the time).

Java development is really well catered for with so many Java libraries available. The reliability has been great. All my important data is backed up, and failover servers are there if there is a problem.

The tech support has been great, especially recently. It used to be hard to get hold of them, but there is now a nifty ticket system too.

Definitely high quality stuff, I'll definitely stay here for a long time :-)

AO Industries provides a great all around number of servlet and JSP packages. All of them include a wide number of server choices as well. they include Tomcat 3.1, Tomcat 4.1.12, and JBoss 2.2. More then anything else is the great service a subscriber gets. On top of that AO has provided a superbly packaged configuration and security system. All Java, all with the source code! If you need a very reasonably priced servlet ISP, race over to AO Industries. These folks know what they're doing.

No Service, Low Reliability, But Many Features

It's a shame that a site with such extensive features has such poor service. Most of my emails to support are completely ignored. When they do choose to answer them, it has never even been within 24 hours.

They claim not to buy into the 99% uptime myth and now I know why. It's seems common for the site to go down -- or for the database server to have issues. In all fairness, when the site is up, it does seem to be very fast.

For $100/month, stay away from this host!

We tried to set up a web in year 2002. We run into technical problems and they *never* answered our emails. No support whatsoever. At first they seem to have excellent features, but if run into trouble you are left in the cold.

It looks like my experience may be different from some of the other folks. I had no problem with this place, only positive things to say.

They have lots of features as well as a very fast network, so I have been happy up to this point.
