Fast, cheap, good support

I host my church website on Positive, and we have done now for over a year. We redesigned last year, and as a part of the re-design moved over to using jsp pages on the site, and servlets to do various bits and bobs. We have been very impressed by Positive Internet and renewed our subscription after the first year. Unless something else pops up which is better value we will probably renew again at this year end!

You can check out their features on their site, but there basic package is suitable for many peoples needs. They not only provide servlets, but also a MySQL DB, PHP, ability to run Perl scripts etc etc. Basically I've installed some e-mail list software, which is Perl based, some Forum software (currently being evaluated for use) which is PHP based, and uses the database, and then I have written the jsp pages, and various bits of Java to power the site! All works tip top!

We have on a number of occasions required their support. And they do all of this via e-mail, and a ticketing system. They ALWAYS get back to your support requests, and very quickly too. This is one thing they are very very good at.

The only slight query is over reliability. Now the church website does not need to be up 24/7, so this is OK. But as there are quite a few users sharing one server the servlet engine (current tomcat) does tend to go down occasionally, and users get servered a server error page. Not a problem really for me, but it may be for you. They do say that if you do need 24/7 then you can go for their dedicated hosting, which is understandable, but we can't afford it! Also nice to note that if you are a charity they will probably give you a discount.

Very patchy, with periods of extreme frustration

I've had a number of problems over the past year with Positive; their 3 hour response time applies to working hours only (fair enough) and the response is often just "I've passed it over to the Java team" and then there is another wait, and then the next person to pick it up doesn't read the whole history of the issue. The java support person Martin is pretty helpful if the support ticket ever gets that far. The final straw has been a period of some days with both my sites completely down due to some sort of server error.
